Day 1 – Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh (256km)

Denise: Our first day starts with a 6 hour bus trip taking us from the capital of Cambodia to Vietnam. There were hiccups, expensive ones.

Jonathan: $450 hiccups. If you want to know what $450 looks like, it’s a red/pink piece of paper with a photo on it.

Denise: We went out for sushi tonight with a dear friend, before our long trip to the North, we ordered SOO MUCH FOOD, and it only came to the total of $31 (including ALL our drinks!) God Bless Vietnam.

With today hopefully being the most expensive trip, husband and wife are going to get some rest before our 7am flight tomorrow.

Goodnight all.

“Hello Teacher” Child

My first week of teaching in Cambodia at an international school is going well, it’s hard to ignore the fact that I have never taught in a school before, we’ll call it a secret between the school and myself. The classroom is air-conditioned due to the average of 30 degrees each day, and the staff seem friendly enough.

It’s the end of my first week and I make my way to the bathrooms which are situated in the corner of each floor of the 4 floor building. Teaching the grade 2’s, I am situated on the second floor amongst 15 classrooms of which 12 of the rooms are for grade 2’s. I make my way into the ladies bathrooms to be greeted by a child on the toilet with the door generously ajar, we make eye contact and mid push of what seems to be a very challenging event she greets me “Helloo teeeachaaaa..” Maintaining my composure was just as challenging as her task at hand.

This is going to be a very eventful journey, we will have to push through it together 😉

Preparing for the Ho Chi Minh Trail

My husband absolutely loves history and the way battles were fought to make a country what it is today, he revels in the strategy and way people must have lived, how they survived and the stories that have come from it… He finds it absolutely fascinating, exhilarating even. Almost like how I find goats never change the direction when they chew their food, absolutely remarkable!

All in all, we are taking a bus from Phnom Penh in Cambodia to Ho Chi Minh in the south of Vietnam, then catching a flight from Saigon airport to Van Don airport in the north of Vietnam. We will then catch a taxi to a very basic town called Cam Pha, where we previously lived for a year and is home to our trusty steed, “The Byke”, a Honda XR 150 which will be our means of transportation for the next 2 239km.

Our trip starts in T- 2days! Hang tight for daily updates, stories, pictures and videos.

About the Bosmans

Denise: We are a couple that met over 10 years ago and eventually got married once Jono (Husband) got out of the friend zone 3 years ago. Denise (wife) did a 9 to 5 as an Account Manager for a Cloud Marketing company in Cape Town, South Africa and Jono (whom is a qualified High School Math Teacher) was failing his studies in Engineering due to the syllabus change once he moved to Cape Town for love and the students were on the brink of striking AGAIN.

Once we got married, we sold everything we had, packed 2 suitcases each and decided to travel to Asia and start teaching. BEST MOVE EVER!

During our year and a half in Vietnam and now in Cambodia, there were so many stories and experiences that we had and shared, people eventually told us to start writing about it, so here we are. We have experienced:

  • Humour
  • Adventure
  • Stories that are just so Asia.
  • Things kids say and do during our teaching days
  • Landscapes, culture and beauty when we are out of the classroom.
  • People with incredible stories and circumstances.

The Bosmans are prepared to entertain and inform you from here on out.

PS. Dad jokes will be inevitable
